Going home: orphans of the gorilla massacre that shocked the world

Posted 10 Dec 2009 in Uncategorized

Moving home is often stressful and sometimes positively traumatic. The last time Ndeze and Ndakasi moved it was horrifying. The two mountain gorilla babies had just been orphaned, their parents murdered in a dispute that led to the sacking of the director of Virunga National Park in eastern Congo. One of the orphan’s fathers, Senkwekwe, became internationally famous as pictures of the silverback’s immense corpse borne aloft on a bamboo trellis by grieving villagers ran in newspapers and magazines around the world. The massacres of 2007 left seven of the critically endangered mammals dead; they also left Ndeze and Ndakasi without a family. The story of this little kitty’s adoption began in Lakewood but spanned the world, virtually speaking, before she found a home just a few miles away, via Reddit.com, a social news aggregator. It began with Sandra Lawrence. She is a Redditor, as Reddit’s regular contributors and readers identify themselves. Checking the news on Reddit is one of the first things she does every morning. “I pretty much ask Reddit whenever I have a problem,” said Lawrence. But photographer Ken Grindle has managed to get a little bit closer, taking this picture of the animal in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire. The majestic wild animal – long associated with mystery and good luck – was filmed by the wildlife enthusiast. Ken, 66, has been filming and photographing wildlife in the area for the past six years – but had never seen a white stag. ‘I was...

The Navy’s Other Seals … And Dolphins

We’ve all heard of the missile gap during the Cold War. This week we learned of another gap between Russia and the United States — a sea lion gap. Gennady Matishov, the director of the Murmansk Marine Biology Institute in northern Russia, told the Russian newspaper Izvestia that Russia needs to catch up to the United States when it comes to militarized sea mammals. Seriously? “It is true that the U.S. military does employ teams of dolphins and sea lions,” Noah Shachtman says. He’s an editor for Wired Magazine and runs its military technology blog, “Danger Room.” They take on two roles, Shachtman says. “One is to look for underwater mines, and the other is that marine mammals are...
