Young sisters who lost their hair cast off their wigs and go to school bald for the first time
Like most little girls, Emily and Faye Sandford dreamed of being princesses with long, flowing hair.
But the sisters, aged 11 and nine, have been left virtually bald after contracting the hair-loss condition alopecia.
However they are refusing to let the problem quell their spirits and have decided to cast off their wigs and go to school bald.
Mrs Sandford, a learning support worker, said: ‘They have got the confidence now to go out and to school without wigs whereas it has been a problem in the past.
‘Losing their hair was obviously a massive thing for them, it is still difficult at times but I’m so proud of them and how they are dealing with it.’
Younger sister Faye was the first to start losing her hair when she was just two and a half, in 2002.Mrs Sandford, 42, from St Helens, Merseyside, did her best to hide the effects with different hairstyles, but by the time Faye was five, the extent of the hair loss could no longer be disguised.Emily started going bald the year after her sister, when she was five.It was harder to cover up the effects and in November 2007 she decided to get her first wig. Faye followed suit the following January and from then on both wore the hairpieces or covered their heads all the time.Mrs Sandford and husband David, 47, a glass technician, said the children’s friends and teachers at Blackbrook St Mary’s Catholic primary school, together with the Alopecia Areata Support Community, had helped the girls come to terms with the condition.Maude Blight, the founder of the Wales-based support organisation, said: ‘It’s difficult for anybody to lose their hair but I think Faye and Emily can support each other - those two girls are very strong.’
